Thasos is the northernmost of the Greek islands in the Aegean, lying a short ferry ride from Keramoti and Kavala on the mainland. Its shape is compact and almost circular, rising from the coast toward Ypsario, the highest summit, near the centre. Much of the island is covered in pine forest, which gives it a greener character than most Aegean islands.
One road circles the island close to the shore, connecting a string of coastal villages and beaches, while older mountain villages such as Theologos and Panagia sit inland on the slopes. The island has been known since antiquity for its white marble, which is still quarried today, and the pale cuts of the quarries show in the hills.
The main town, Limenas, occupies the north coast on the site of the ancient city, with remains of its agora, theatre and walls among the modern streets.
