Samothrace lies in the northern Aegean, off the coast of Thrace. It is compact and roughly oval, but it is dominated by Mount Fengari, one of the highest peaks in the Aegean islands. From above, the mountain fills most of the island. Its slopes run down on every side to a narrow coastal strip, and the terrain is cut by steep streams, gorges and waterfalls.
The ferry port, Kamariotissa, is on the northwest coast. From there, a road follows the northern shore towards the island's springs and plane-tree woods. Chora, the main village, sits on the slopes inland. A Samothrace map poster shows the strong contrast between the empty, high centre and the thin line of settlement along the edge.
Near the north coast lie the remains of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a major religious site of the ancient world. The marble statue known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace was found there in 1863 and is now in the Louvre.
