Imbros, called Gökçeada in Turkish, is Turkey's largest island and lies in the northern Aegean, west of the Gallipoli peninsula. Its outline is broad and compact, longer from east to west, with a hilly volcanic interior and a coastline of cliffs and sandy bays. Roads link a small number of villages spread across the uplands and valleys.
The island has a layered history. A long-established Greek community built old villages such as Zeytinliköy and Tepeköy, which still stand among the hills. The main town lies inland, while Kaleköy sits below a castle overlooking a harbour on the north coast. Ferries arrive at Kuzu Limanı on the eastern side.
