Piñas is in the upland part of El Oro Province in southwestern Ecuador, on the western slopes of the Andes above the coastal lowlands. The town is built along ridges and hillsides, and on a map its streets follow the terrain. They run along crests and bend down slopes, which gives the whole place an irregular, elongated outline.
The mountains around Piñas are covered in humid forest, and cloud forest reserves in the area are well known to birdwatchers for species found in few other places. The town itself is a regional centre for the surrounding farming communities, linked by winding roads that descend toward the coast and climb further into the highlands.
