Porathissery is in central Kerala, in the low country between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. It does not look like a compact town from above. Houses are scattered along lanes that bend around coconut gardens, ponds and small plots. The result is a dense, organic web with no clear centre and few straight lines.
This kind of settlement pattern is typical of Kerala, where villages and towns often merge into one continuous inhabited landscape. On the map, roads rarely meet at right angles. They split, curve and rejoin, following old property lines and slight rises in the ground. Where the land is too wet to build on, open patches mark paddy fields.
