Queenstown was the first satellite town in Singapore, planned in the early 1950s and named to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. From above, the estate is a pattern of long housing slabs and point blocks set among curving roads, with a lot of green space between them. It looks very different from the tight shophouse grids closer to the city centre.
Commonwealth Avenue and Alexandra Road are the main routes, and the East West MRT line runs through on its own alignment. The disused railway corridor, now a walking and cycling trail, passes through the estate as a continuous green strip. The estate was developed in phases, and each precinct has its own layout. Some older blocks have been replaced, while others remain from the early decades of public housing.
