Rāmnagar stands on the east bank of the Ganges, across the river from the ghats of Varanasi. While Varanasi's west bank is crowded with temples and steps down to the water, the east bank has long been more open. Rāmnagar is the main settlement there, gathered close to the river.
The town is known for Ramnagar Fort, built in the eighteenth century as the residence of the Maharajas of Benares. It stands directly on the riverbank. Rāmnagar is also famous for its Ramlila, a staged retelling of the Ramayana that takes place across the town for about a month each year.
