Rangāpāra lies in the Sonitpur district of Assam, on the plains north of the Brahmaputra, with the Himalayan foothills rising in the distance. The town grew up around the railway, and the tracks are among the strongest lines on its map. Lines cross and branch at Rangapara North junction, and the streets around them cluster around the station.
The countryside around it is tea country. Tea estates cover large areas of the plain, and they appear on the map as wide, orderly blocks broken up by estate roads, labour lines and shade trees. Villages and paddy fields fill the space between the estates, with small rivers flowing south toward the Brahmaputra.
