Ranong sits on Thailand's Andaman coast at the mouth of the Kra Buri River, the waterway that forms the border with Myanmar. Directly across the estuary lies Kawthaung, and boats cross between the two throughout the day. On the map, the town occupies a strip of land between forested hills to the east and a maze of mangrove creeks to the west.
The province is known as the wettest in Thailand, and the heavy rain feeds dense forest and the tidal channels that thread the coastline. Ranong is also known for its natural hot springs, which rise at the edge of town and have long drawn visitors. Piers and fishing harbours line the waterfront.
