Rioja is a provincial capital in the San Martín region of northern Peru, set in the Alto Mayo valley on the eastern side of the Andes. The land here is unusually flat for the region, and the town has spread across it in a regular pattern of blocks centred on a main square, in the tradition of Spanish colonial town planning.
Around the town, the valley floor is given over to cultivated fields, many of them used for rice, crossed by streams, farm tracks and irrigation channels. The main road through the Alto Mayo links Rioja with Moyobamba and other towns of the valley. Further out, the ground climbs into forested hills, and the map changes from straight lines to looser, natural contours.
