Riom lies just north of Clermont-Ferrand, where the flat, fertile Limagne meets the first slopes rising toward the Chaîne des Puys. From above, the old town stands out immediately. It is an almost circular knot of streets inside a loop of boulevards that follows the line of the former ramparts. Two main streets cross near the middle and divide the core into quarters.
Riom was once the seat of the dukes of Auvergne. Its Sainte-Chapelle, built for John, Duke of Berry, survives from the ducal palace, and the law courts now stand on the palace site. Many townhouses are built of dark volcanic Volvic stone. In 1942 the town gave its name to the Riom Trial, in which the Vichy regime prosecuted former leaders of the Third Republic.

East of the town the land flattens into the broad Limagne, while to the west it climbs toward the Chaîne des Puys, so the sheet has two contrasting halves.
