Rwamwanja is a refugee settlement in Kamwenge District, in western Uganda. It does not look like a city on a map. It is a wide rural area of hills and valleys, crossed by unpaved tracks, with homes and farm plots spread over the land and a few denser points where services, markets and schools gather.
The settlement was reopened in 2012 to receive people who had fled conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. As is common in Uganda's settlement model, households were allocated plots of land to live on and farm, which is why the map shows a spread-out pattern rather than tightly packed shelters.
