Samobor lies just west of Zagreb, where the plain of the Sava meets the Samobor Hills. The map shows it clearly: the town spreads comfortably over flat ground to the east, while the western edge breaks up into narrow valleys and winding roads climbing into forest. The Gradna stream runs through the historic centre, and the town has grown up along its banks.
The old core centres on a broad main square, King Tomislav Square, with streets leading off it and small bridges crossing the stream. Above the town are the ruins of a medieval castle on a wooded hill. Samobor is also known across Croatia for its kremšnita, a custard cream cake, and for a carnival that has been held for well over a century.
