San Giovanni Rotondo sits on the southern slopes of the Gargano promontory in Apulia, at a height well above the Tavoliere plain. Its map has two distinct parts. There is the older town, a compact tangle of streets, and a newer district that grew around the Capuchin friary with wide avenues, hotels and religious buildings.
The town is known worldwide as the place where Padre Pio lived and is buried. It draws large numbers of pilgrims every year. Its name refers to a round medieval baptistery, and its modern landmarks include the hospital Padre Pio founded, the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, and the large pilgrimage church designed by Renzo Piano.
