San Ignacio is the main town of Belize's Cayo District, near the border with Guatemala. It sits on the west bank of the Macal River, with its twin town, Santa Elena, on the opposite side. On a map the two are joined by bridges, including the single-lane Hawkesworth suspension bridge, and together they read as one settlement split by water.
The streets climb and bend around hills rather than following a grid, and the town centre is compact, with a market area close to the river. Not far downstream, the Macal meets the Mopan River to form the Belize River, which flows east toward the coast. On a hill above the town are the remains of Cahal Pech, a Maya site that predates the modern settlement by many centuries.
