San Luis del Palmar lies in Corrientes province in north-eastern Argentina, a short drive east of the city of Corrientes. The Riachuelo winds past the town, and the land around it is low and watery. From above, a compact grid of streets around a central square sits on slightly higher ground, surrounded by lagoons, marshes and open pasture.
It is one of the older towns in the province, dating from the colonial period, and it has kept a quiet, traditional character, with low houses and wide streets. Cattle raising and farming have long been the main activities in the surrounding countryside, shaped by the wet grasslands typical of Corrientes.
