Sapé stands in the Mata Paraibana, the humid eastern region of Paraíba, west of the state capital, João Pessoa. From above, its streets form a fairly regular pattern of blocks around a central core. Newer neighbourhoods reach outward along the main roads, and the edges of town give way quickly to cultivated land.
The Sapé map poster reads as a small, clearly defined town: a dense centre with squares and churches, residential blocks in a looser rhythm around it, and the long lines of roads and field boundaries running off into the countryside. It is a modest, orderly plan, drawn in fine black lines against a lot of open space.
Sapé holds an important place in twentieth-century Brazilian history. In the late 1950s and early 1960s it was home to one of the largest of the Peasant Leagues, the rural workers' movements of the Northeast. The poet Augusto dos Anjos, one of the most distinctive voices in Brazilian literature, was born on a sugar plantation in the area.
