Savé lies in the Collines department of central Benin, a name that fits: the town is surrounded by rounded granite hills rising from the plain. On the map, those outcrops appear as blank or softly shaded areas that the streets avoid, so the town's roads bend around them and cluster in the lower ground between.
Savé is the historic centre of the Shabe, a Yoruba kingdom, and remains an important market town on the route between the coast and northern Benin. The main north–south highway and the railway from Cotonou both pass through the area, giving the map two long, straight lines that contrast with the irregular pattern of local streets.
