Shawan sits in the southern part of Gansu, where the uplands of China's northwest give way to steeper, more folded country. From above, the town is a narrow settlement fitted into a valley floor. Its roads run lengthwise because the terrain leaves little room for anything else. The page is shaped more by the edges of the hills and a winding watercourse than by any grid.
