Shizukuishi lies in Iwate Prefecture, just west of Morioka, in a broad basin at the foot of Mount Iwate. From above, the town centre is small and compact, while the surrounding municipality is dominated by farmland, forests, river valleys and the long reservoir of Lake Gosho, formed by a dam on the Shizukuishi River.
The town is known for Koiwai Farm, a large, historic farm founded in the late nineteenth century and now a popular destination for its pastures and dairy products. Shizukuishi's ski resort hosted the 1993 Alpine World Ski Championships, bringing international attention to the slopes on the mountains to the west.
