Siderno reads as two places on one map. Inland, on the slopes, the old upper town keeps its narrow, winding lanes. Down on the coast, the marina district spreads out in a straighter pattern of streets running parallel to the shore. Between them, roads climb and zigzag through the hills, stitching the two halves together.
The town belongs to the Locride, the stretch of Ionian coastline in southern Calabria. Along the beach, the coastal railway and main road run side by side, drawing a long line that the whole seafront grid is organised around. East of the tracks there is only sand and the smooth edge of the sea.
