Skiathos is the westernmost of the Northern Sporades, lying just off the Pelion peninsula. The island has a roughly oval shape, its southern and eastern shores scalloped into a long series of bays and beaches, while the north is steeper and wilder. A main road runs along the south coast from the town toward the western tip, with side roads dropping down to each beach.
Skiathos Town occupies the southeast, built across two low hills beside a harbour divided by the small, pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula. Just to the north lies the airport, whose runway ends close to the water and is known for the low approach of arriving planes. The town was the birthplace of the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, whose house is now a museum.
At the western end, Koukounaries is one of the best-known beaches in Greece, a crescent of sand backed by pines and a small lagoon.
