Sōja lies in southern Okayama Prefecture, just west of the city of Okayama, on land crossed by the Takahashi River. From above, the town is a mix of streets, rail lines and rice paddies spread across a flat plain, with low, wooded hills around the edges. The river runs along the western side of town in a wide channel.
The area was once the heart of the ancient Kibi kingdom, and the landscape still carries traces of that past. The five-storied pagoda of Bitchū Kokubun-ji temple stands among the fields east of the town and is one of the best-known sights in the prefecture. Burial mounds from the Kofun period are scattered across the plain.

Rice paddies form a fine grid across the flat land around the town. It is the landscape of the ancient Kibi kingdom, still used for farming today.
Kokubun-ji area
The temple and its five-storied pagoda stand among open fields east of the centre. The area around it stays rural, so it shows up as a quiet part of the map.
