Sonpet is a town in Parbhani district, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. It lies in the wide basin of the Godavari, on the dark cotton soils that cover much of the Deccan plateau. It serves as a taluka headquarters and market centre for the surrounding villages, whose farms grow cotton, soybean, jowar and pulses.
From above, the older part of Sonpet is a dense cluster of irregular lanes. Newer neighbourhoods spread along the main roads in more regular blocks. The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling, cut by nalas that carry water only in the monsoon season, and divided into fields that are large compared with those of eastern India.
