Souza lies in the Littoral region of Cameroon, inland from Douala, in a green, well-watered landscape of plantations and smallholdings. The word Gare in its name points to the railway: the settlement grew around a station on the line running north from the coast. On the map, the track is one of the defining straight lines, cutting across a pattern of roads and footpaths.
Around the station, a compact centre of streets and buildings forms the busiest part of town. Roads lead out toward neighbouring communities and the main routes between Douala and the interior.
