Stockton-on-Tees stands on the north bank of the River Tees in north-east England, where the river swings through a series of broad meanders on its way to the sea. The town's map is built around those curves and around its High Street, a long, exceptionally wide market street often described as the widest in England.
Stockton's name is tied to the start of the railway age. In 1825 the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened as the first public railway to use steam locomotives. The town is also associated with John Walker, a local chemist credited with inventing the friction match. On the river, the Tees Barrage controls the water level and has created a stretch used for rowing and water sports.
