Suhl sits on the southern side of the Thuringian Forest, and its shape follows the valleys where streams meet below forested ridges. On the map the town reads as a set of elongated arms rather than a round centre, with streets packed tightly along the valley floors and blank, wooded hillsides rising on either side.
The old town lies where the valleys converge, with its compact streets and market square. Newer housing districts climb onto the terraces above. For centuries Suhl was known for gunsmithing and metalwork, and in the twentieth century it became home to Simson, the maker of mopeds and motorcycles familiar across East Germany.
