Szekszárd is the seat of Tolna County in southern Hungary, set where a line of loess hills drops toward the wide floodplain of the Danube. On the map, that meeting of terrains is the main story. To the west, roads climb into the hills in curving lines between vineyards; to the east, the land flattens into fields, drainage channels and floodplain forest.
The town is best known for wine. The Szekszárd wine district produces mainly red wines, and its version of Bikavér is among the region's signatures.
