Târgu Neamț is in northeastern Romania, where the Moldavian lowlands meet the first ridges of the Eastern Carpathians. From above, the town spreads along the Ozana river (also called the Neamț). Its streets run along the valley and climb gradually up the slopes on either side.
The main landmark is the Neamț Citadel, a medieval fortress on a wooded hill just west of the centre. It was strengthened under Stephen the Great in the fifteenth century. On the map its access road winds up from the town. The district of Humulești, the childhood home of the writer Ion Creangă, is on the other side of the river.
