Tarifa sits at the southernmost point of continental Europe, on the Strait of Gibraltar. From above, the town is a compact walled core on the coast, with a narrow causeway running out to the Isla de las Palomas, the actual southern tip. Across the water, only around fourteen kilometres away, lies the coast of Morocco.
The old town keeps its tight medieval street pattern within the walls, with the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno overlooking the harbour. To the northwest, the long sandy beaches of Los Lances and Valdevaqueros curve along the Atlantic shore. Constant winds through the strait have made Tarifa one of Europe’s best-known destinations for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
