Tikkotti, also written Thikkodi, lies on the Malabar Coast in Kozhikode district, northern Kerala. The map is long and thin. The Arabian Sea forms a nearly straight western edge, and the settlement stretches along it rather than gathering around a single centre. Lanes run inland from the beach between houses and coconut palms.
Parallel lines give the place its structure. The coastal railway runs just behind the shore, and the main road follows a similar course. Small cross-lanes link the two, producing a ladder-like pattern that is typical of this stretch of Kerala. Streams and backwater channels break the ladder in places and add a few curved lines to an otherwise linear layout.
The name is known well beyond the town. The Malayalam playwright and writer who wrote under the pen name Thikkodiyan took it from his birthplace. A Tikkotti map poster reduces all this to a quiet drawing of coast, rail and road, which is exactly how this part of Malabar looks from above.
