Tiom lies in the central highlands of Papua, the administrative centre of Lanny Jaya Regency in the province of Highland Papua. It sits at altitude among steep, forested ridges, and the map shows a town with few streets and a great deal of surrounding terrain, where roads follow valleys and hillsides rather than any regular pattern.
The highlands are among the least accessible parts of New Guinea by road, and air travel still plays an important role in daily life. The town's airstrip is one of its most recognisable features from above, a straight line set into a landscape otherwise shaped by slopes, gardens and streams.
