Tobré is in the Atakora department of northwestern Benin, a region of savanna, scattered hills and farmland. Seen from above, the town is small and open. A few roads come together near its centre, lined with compounds, and then continue outward across a landscape of cultivated fields and dry-season tracks.
There is no dense grid here. The pattern is looser and more rural: clusters of buildings, paths linking them, and wide spaces between. On a black and white map this becomes a spare, airy composition in which each line counts. The emptiness around the roads is part of the picture, because it reflects how much of the area is still open land.
