Tōno lies in a basin in the Kitakami highlands of Iwate prefecture, with mountains on every side. The map shows a clear division. The flat valley floor holds the town, rice fields and roads. The wooded slopes around it are mostly empty. Rivers flow across the basin and give the lowland its shape.
The town is best known through Tōno Monogatari, the collection of local legends that Kunio Yanagita published in 1910, one of the founding works of Japanese folklore studies. Kappa, mountain spirits and old farmhouses from those stories are still part of how the town presents itself. The JR Kamaishi Line crosses the basin on its way to the Pacific coast.
