Trapani has one of the most distinctive coastlines in Italy. The old town fills a narrow, curved spit of land that points west into the Mediterranean. The ancient Greeks called the settlement Drepanon, meaning sickle, after exactly this shape. On the map, the historic streets fill the spit from shore to shore.
South of the city, the flat coast is divided into the rectangular basins of the Trapani salt pans, still worked and edged by old windmills. Behind the city rises Monte San Giuliano with the medieval town of Erice on top. Ferries leave from the harbour for the Egadi Islands just offshore.
