Trbovlje occupies a tight side valley in Slovenia's Zasavje region, running north from the Sava River. The hills close in on both sides, so the town is long and thin. Its main streets follow the valley floor, and smaller streets climb the slopes wherever the gradient allows.
For generations this was coal country. Mining shaped the town's growth, its housing estates and its strong industrial and workers' culture. The old power station on the Sava has one of the tallest chimneys in Europe, at about 360 metres. Trbovlje is also known as the home town of the band Laibach.
