Tzaneen lies in the Letaba valley of Limpopo, below the escarpment that rises toward Magoebaskloof and Haenertsburg. On a map the town is a modest grid of streets on gently sloping ground. Suburbs spread along the hillsides, and roads leave in several directions through plantations and forest. The terrain gives the plan a softer, less regular edge than the flat towns of the highveld.
The region is one of South Africa's main producers of subtropical fruit, especially avocados, mangoes and bananas, and tea was once grown widely on the nearby slopes. Just outside the town, the Tzaneen Dam holds back the Great Letaba River. The long, branching reservoir adds a large area of water to any wider view of the map.
