Udalguri sits on the flat northern plains of Assam, where the land slowly rises toward the Himalayan foothills along the Bhutan border. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets set in wide farmland, with roads running out in several directions toward nearby villages and tea estates.
The town is the headquarters of Udalguri district, part of the Bodoland Territorial Region. That administrative role shows on the map as a cluster of denser blocks around the centre. Beyond them the pattern opens quickly into scattered settlements, field boundaries and the thin lines of seasonal streams coming down from the north.
