Upper Hutt Map Poster & Print
Upper Hutt lies at the northern end of the Hutt Valley, north of Wellington. The Hutt River runs down the valley floor, and the city spreads along it between steep, forested hills. On a map, the urban area forms a long, narrow band that follows the river and State Highway 2, with suburbs extending into side valleys and open country beyond.
Trentham Racecourse and the army camp sit in the south of the city, while to the north the valley narrows towards Kaitoke Regional Park, where scenes for the Rivendell sequences of The Lord of the Rings were filmed. To the east, the Remutaka Range separates the valley from the Wairarapa, crossed by the old Remutaka Incline railway route, now a rail trail.
An Upper Hutt map poster shows a city defined by its valley. The river and highway draw the central line, the side streets climb as far as the hills allow, and the ranges leave broad empty edges on the page. In black and white, the design reads like a cross-section of the landscape, with settlement squeezed into every flat space available.

Valley walls
Forested hills rise on both sides, so streets stop abruptly at the slopes, leaving clean edges and a strong linear shape to the city.
Trentham
In the south, the racecourse and army camp create large open shapes within the urban fabric, clearly visible among the surrounding suburban streets.
