Ursus was an independent town until 2002, when it became a district of Warsaw. On the map it still reads like a separate place: a distinct cluster on the city's western edge, separated from central Warsaw by rail corridors and open ground. Its streets mix pre-war lots, large residential estates and the wide footprint of former industrial land.
The name is closely tied to the Ursus tractor works, which shaped the district for most of the twentieth century. In June 1976, workers here, along with workers in Radom, protested against price rises. That protest is now regarded as an important step towards the opposition movement that came later in Poland.
An Ursus map poster shows how industry organised the place. The railway lines form hard edges, the old factory ground is large and plain, and the housing grows around them in blocks and curves. In black and white, the district looks like its own small town, even though it is now part of the capital.

Former factory grounds
The large site of the tractor works is a broad, open shape among the smaller streets, which makes it easy to recognise the industrial core the district grew around.
Housing estates
Post-war and newer residential estates fill much of the district with repeated block patterns, a texture that gives the print a clear rhythm.
