Valence stands on the left bank of the Rhône in the Drôme, where the valley opens toward Provence. The historic centre is a tight cluster of irregular streets on a rise above the river. Around it, a ring of broad boulevards traces the line of the former ramparts, giving the core a clear, rounded outline.
To the west, the Rhône runs broad and straight past the city, with the A7 motorway alongside it. On the map, river and road form two parallel lines that separate the town from the water. Beyond the boulevards, later districts spread east and south in more regular blocks.
The city has been called the gateway to the south of France. It is known for its cathedral of Saint-Apollinaire, the Maison des Têtes and the Champ de Mars esplanade with its bandstand overlooking the river.
