From above, Vidin follows a wide bend of the Danube. The river runs along the town's eastern and northern edges, and the streets back away from the bank in a loose fan. Riverside parkland separates the water from the older quarters. Past these, the blocks grow larger and more regular as the town spreads onto the flat Danubian plain.
Vidin's best-known landmark is Baba Vida, a medieval fortress on the riverbank. It is one of the best-preserved castles in Bulgaria. On a map it shows as a compact walled shape pressed against the water. Remains of the old town fortifications survive near it, so the historic centre is easy to spot in the street pattern even at poster scale.
South of the town, the New Europe Bridge crosses the Danube to Calafat in Romania, a long straight line over open water.
