Vinh is the capital of Nghệ An Province, set on the north bank of the Lam River a short distance inland from the South China Sea. On the map the river forms the city's southern boundary, and the streets spread north and west across flat land, with the small peak of Dũng Quyết rising beside the riverbank.
The city was heavily bombed during the war and largely rebuilt afterwards, partly with assistance from East Germany, which helped create the Quang Trung housing blocks. That reconstruction gave Vinh broad, straight avenues and a more regular layout than many Vietnamese cities of its size. Near the centre, the moat of the old Vinh citadel remains visible.
