Vordingborg lies at the southern tip of Zealand in Denmark, where the land meets the narrow waters of Storstrømmen. On a map, the coastline is decisive. The town sits on a bay, the island of Masnedø lies just offshore, and long bridges stretch south across the strait towards Falster and the rest of southern Denmark.
In the Middle Ages this was one of the most important royal strongholds in the kingdom, and the ruins of Vordingborg Castle still mark the waterfront. Its surviving Goose Tower is one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Denmark. The old town spreads north of the ruins in a compact pattern of streets, with the harbour and railway at its edge.
