Xiasi lies in Majiang County, in south-eastern Guizhou, on the upper reaches of the Qingshui River. Seen from above, the river sets the plan. The historic town follows a bend of the water, with narrow lanes running parallel to the bank and short passages leading down to it. Beyond the river, the hills close in, and fields and roads settle into the valleys between them.
For centuries Xiasi was a river port, a point where goods moved between upland Guizhou and the waterways that lead toward Hunan. The old quarter, with its stone lanes and riverside buildings, has since been restored as an ancient town. On the map that history appears as a finer, denser grain of streets than the newer districts around it.
