Xituo is a town in Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, part of Chongqing, on the south bank of the Yangtze. It grew as a river port on the route that carried salt from the Yangtze into the hills of western Hubei, and it is best known for its ancient stepped street, which runs up the hillside at right angles to the river rather than along it.
That stepped street, often called the Ladder Street, gives the town an unusual map: a single long spine pointing inland from the water, with lanes and terraces branching off on either side. Newer districts spread along the riverbank, while the steep surrounding hills keep the built area in narrow bands between the reservoir-widened Yangtze and the slopes.
