Yauco sits in the south-west of Puerto Rico, where the coastal plain meets the foothills of the Cordillera Central. From above, the town's centre is a compact grid around a main plaza, but the streets quickly bend and climb as they reach the surrounding hills, giving the map a mix of order and contour-following curves.
A Yauco map poster shows the town's position between valley and mountain. The historic core occupies the flatter ground along the river, while newer neighbourhoods spread along the slopes. Roads lead south toward the coast and the PR-2 highway and north into the hills, where scattered houses follow the ridgelines.
Yauco is known as the Pueblo del Café for its long coffee-growing tradition, and coffee from its hillside farms has been exported for well over a century.
