Yelizovo sits in the Avacha valley in southern Kamchatka, roughly half an hour's drive inland from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Avacha River winds past the town through a broad plain, and the streets spread across the flat ground in loose, mostly rectilinear blocks. Beyond them the land rises quickly toward the volcanic ranges that define the peninsula.
Most visitors to Kamchatka land here first, because the region's main airport is in Yelizovo. From the runway and the town, the volcanoes Koryaksky and Avachinsky are clearly visible on a clear day, their snowy cones filling the view. The town is also a starting point for trips to hot springs, rivers and volcano trails.
