Zaïo lies in Nador Province in Morocco's Oriental region, on the broad agricultural lowland of the lower Moulouya, not far from where the river runs toward the Mediterranean. The town serves as a market and service centre for the surrounding farmland, and its growth has followed the main roads that cross the plain.
Seen from above, Zaïo is laid out on a mostly regular pattern of streets and blocks, with a clear central spine and newer districts filling in around it. The land beyond is divided into long irrigated parcels, a reminder that this is one of the productive farming areas of north-eastern Morocco.
