Żoliborz lies just north of central Warsaw, on the high left bank of the Vistula. Its name is usually traced to the French joli bord, a beautiful embankment, a reference to the escarpment above the river. From above it is one of the most distinctive districts in the city, greener and more deliberately planned than most of its neighbours.
The heart of the map is Plac Wilsona, a round square from which avenues spread outward like spokes, laid out in the interwar years when Żoliborz was developed for officers, officials and cooperative housing. Villa quarters, garden-city streets and the courtyards of the Warsaw Housing Cooperative fill the spaces between them in varied, carefully designed patterns.
To the south lies the Warsaw Citadel, a nineteenth-century Russian fortress whose angular, bastioned outline remains clear on any map, and along the river runs a belt of parkland including Kępa Potocka. The nineteenth-century fortress on the district's southern edge appears as a bold, angular shape, its bastions and ditches still easy to read from above.

Along the river, a belt of green space including Kępa Potocka and its narrow channel softens the eastern side of the map and follows the curve of the Vistula.
